The lizard brain
The lizard brain is a colloquial term for the most basic parts of your brain.
We are primal animals. We dont interact with machines in the same way as we interact with humans.
IT is very good at overlooking the lizard brain. We are animals. We interact with animals. Technical solutions are limited in their ability to meet human needs. Be human. Changing people requires primal bonding.
limbic system of the brain has been implicated as the seat of emotion, addiction, mood, and lots of other mental and emotional processes. It is the part of the brain that is phylogenetic ally very primitive. Many people call it “The Lizard Brain” because the limbic system is about all a lizard has for brain function. It is in charge of fight, flight, feeding, fear, freezing-up, and fornication.
In order to achieve any organisational or behavioural change, you must connect.
No team is truly a team until they break bread (or get hammered) together. After that you can be as virtual as you like but real teams have engaged in the real world.
Email is not communication. At a minimum use your voice. And if at all possible be in the same room. We work on subtle body language - and smells - that no video link can reproduce. That's why we have principles like go to gemba, and MBWA.
Virtual will never replace real. Why do we crowd into cities? It's all about face time.
If you really want to bond with people then shake hands, meet their eye, share food and drink, meet their family and let them meet yours.
DevOps only works when you have a foundation of trust, respect and empathy. And your lizard brain only gives that to animals it has seen and touched and smelt.
